Our Service Technician was called out to a new customers home for a shower faucet problem. After arriving at their home, he asked what was it they needed. They informed our tech that they wanted a bid to replace the entire shower faucet which was behind the tile wall and not a small job. Then he asked them why they wanted to change it. They responded that XYZ Plumbers (not their real name) came out to fix a leak on the shower valve and told them they would have to replace the entire faucet. And it will cost $800.00 to do the job.

Our tech took one look at the shower faucet and informed them that it could be repaired right now and no need to replace the entire faucet. Naturally, we won them over with a simple change of a cartridge in the faucet. We have another new customer and they saved hundreds of dollars.

Today I’m reminded of how important clear communication is within a business relationship. Yesterday our 3rd annual customer appreciation BBQ was a great way to do just that in a very casual setting. Everyone had a great time and the food was wonderful.

We also had a surprise live music performance from several clients who just came from practice. Led by by Cliff Johnson, they agreed to play their ukulele and sang several songs that we all knew. For those of you that heard the live performance and wish to contact our ukulele group try cliffj2757@msn.com. I wish to thank Cliff and the gang for their wonderful ukulele performance. What a treat it was!

I spoke with all who attended and the comments were very similar. For the benefit of those who were not able to attend I’m including some responses. Almost everyone was glad that they had finally met a honest and clean plumbing service with master plumbers. Many were surprised by the large inventory of material we have in stock in our shop. Most people don’t realize we have toilets, garbage disposals, water heaters and sewer pumps (just to name a few) in stock.

It’s rewarding for me to meet some of our customers for the first time and to visit with longtime friends. Our staff worked very hard at this event and I’m very proud of them and publicly wanted to thank them and their spouses for years of excellent help and service to our clients and each other. Our good reputation would not be possible without them. Great job!

Many of the conversations were of horror stories of other plumbing companies. There are a lot of choices when it comes to picking a good plumber. I just wish our clients didn’t have to learn the hard way before they try our services. But they do appreciate us more after trying to use others services. But I guess that how we all learn ultimately.

I’ve been plumbing in Nevada County since 1980 and running Mark Davis Plumbing since 1990. When it comes to hiring good staff I too have learned the hard way. I used to look for good mechanics, but I soon learned that way was short sited. Now we look for good people and train them to be good mechanics. I found we have more fun and long term happier employees that I enjoy doing things with outside of work.

On a sad note, Karen Platner who worked in our office is retiring from our company July 17th after working faithfully over 11 years together. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more of her and her husband socially and not talking about business. Karen will be missed. We wish Karen well and pray that she will receive blessings.

Today is the first day of my new blogging experience. I hope to be able to share my professional experiences and record my plumbing ideas without getting too gross. I like the idea that an acquaintance Lance suggested, for this writing of mine to be my daily drip! It seemed very appropriate in my plumbing-related kind of thinking. Anyway it”s better than the daily dribble. Which may be more accurate, but I’m thinking with a more positive twist.

Today we have so many concerns in our daily lives that it’s hard to do all that we need or even to do what we want. I’m glad to be able to say I want to share my ideas with all to see. One of my founding principles in business is of course the golden rule. But it is also a testimony of who you really are personally. Some people live one way and act another way. This is exactly what I wish to avoid, but to be real.

My pet peeve is self-serving interest only in any relationship. There is no glory at the end of life with not making this place a little better than it was when we got here. Even if I’m wrong it is more satisfying to help others like a higher calling.

I believe the plumbing industry has revolutionized the world for the better. I mean “Plumber protect the health of this nation” is not just a phrase but a reality if done up to minimum standard codes in the Nation. Our company uses the Uniformed Plumbing Code (UPC) as our standards like a bible is to the soul. Without it there is no way to learn or grow. And you have nothing to gauge the correct and better than learning the hard way. It’s actually refreshing to not have to reinvent the plumbing system from scratch. I have had the opportunity to learn the plumbing trade in part from my father-in-law and his father-in-law. Which is by no coincidence, I believe it was the way it’s meant to be–the older teaching the younger.
